Do you fidget and have trouble concentrating? These are two hallmark symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, commonly called ADHD. This condition doesn’t just affect kids. In fact, adults can suffer from ADHD as well.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a condition that hinders your ability to stay focused and exert impulse control. Although symptoms of the disorder usually begin in childhood, the condition can continue through the teen years into adulthood. Usually, the hyperactivity portion of the condition ends in adulthood while the attention deficit part remains. Those with ADHD will usually exhibit an inability to pay attention, are disorganized and have poor impulse control.

What Causes ADHD?

There are currently no known causes of ADHD. It is suggested that the disorder may be due to a combination of genes and the environment. Factors causing ADHD may be one or more of the following:

  • Genetics
  • A mother’s use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs during pregnancy
  • Exposure to environmental toxins like lead in early childhood
  • Low birth weight
  • Brain injury

Although some of these conditions could make ADHD symptoms worse, they are not the primary cause.

Those who suffer from ADHD usually exhibit the following three behaviors:

  • Inattention: Inability to pay attention
  • Hyperactivity: Being overactive at inappropriate times
  • Impulsivity: Acting without thinking of the consequences

These behaviors inhibit growth and development for ADHD patients. Other symptoms that fall under the main three behaviors mentioned above include:

  • Overlooking or missing details in schoolwork or at work
  • Having trouble paying attention during lectures, conversations, while reading, or at play
  • Not listening when being spoken to directly by another person
  • Failing to finish tasks such as homework, chores, or workplace duties
  • Beginning a task in earnest but quickly losing interest
  • Losing possessions like school supplies, keys, glasses, wallets, cellphones, and other valuable items needed to get through the day
  • Having trouble managing time, staying organized, meeting deadlines, and turning in homework
  • Forgetting to return calls and keep appointments

Signs of hyperactivity include:

  • Fidgeting or squirming
  • Walking around when being seated is expected such as in the classroom or at work
  • Feeling restless for adults, or running and climbing on things for children
  • Being unable to stay quiet during activities
  • Talking non-stop
  • Speaking out of turn and interrupting conversations

What Are the Treatment Options for ADHD?

Although the symptoms noted above may be indicators of ADHD, exhibiting these behaviors doesn’t necessarily mean you have the disorder. These symptoms are prevalent in other conditions like depression, anxiety, or learning disorders. Visit your doctor for a complete evaluation. If you are diagnosed with ADHD, treatment options can include:

Medication

Prescription medication can reduce the symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity, allowing the patient to focus on work or school.

Therapy

Therapists help adults and children learn strategies to manage tasks, organize schedules, and follow routines.

Education & Training

Professionals help parents and families learn coping mechanisms and proactive ways to interact with their loved one who is struggling with ADHD.
